Annual Presentation Evening - Friday 28th May 2010
Unlike last year when a formal dinner was held in the Memorial Hall, this year volunteers toiled all afternoon erecting marquees and pergolas on the pitch at Upcott Field for a buffet dinner and discotheque in the evening, writes Alistair Clements. A warm evening aided the event with an attendance well into three figures comprising guests, supporters and players. Guest of Honour was Mark Hayman (with Mrs Hayman), the Chairman of the Peninsula League, and the Club was pleased also to welcome Terry Schofield and Mike Bradshaw (with their respective wives) who are the leading lights in arranging the Joma South West Challenge Cup to be played in July, which features amongst others, Championship side Doncaster Rovers, Second Division sides Leyton Orient, Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley plus Scottish Premiership guests Kilmarnock, an attractive feature. Holsworthy will host certainly one of the games and probably two.
Chairman of the Club, Barry Parrish, opened proceedings with the guests responding before Claire Wilson of the Club's main sponsor R & C.H.Wilson Ltd the local builders, presented the seasons awards. Third teamers, brothers Alex and Andrew Bayley collected Player of the Year and Most Improved Player respectively with Shaun Dillon being Players Player of the Year. Andrew Butler, Alex Parker and Ryan Walters gained the Second Team awards with Lee Rundle and Danny Allen gaining those for the First Team.
Clubman of the Year Mickey Clarke was a unanimously popular choice as was the special award to Dawn Curtis and Ween Masters, who with Elaine Steele run the Upcott Field canteen during all games and who undertook the catering for the buffet (and well received it was).
The Bloomer Award, to everyone’s glee went to Mayor of Holsworthy, Doc Brown who was nearly decapitated during one game when a stray shot hit his cap and spun it through 180 degrees. His heading abilities were always in some doubt! A really good evening culminating in a disco was enjoyed by all. A special word of thanks goes to Wendy and Amy Rogers who with Angie Parrish toiled all afternoon decorating and arranging the marquee.
As a prelude to the coming season ground works, repairs, maintenance and the like are now underway every Monday evening(from 6.30 p.m.) and anyone who can spare an hour or two would be greatly welcome. Ability is not necessary!
