Holsworthy AFC Sportsman’s Dinner - 24th October 2009
In the evening after the Throgmorton Cup game against Teignmouth, the Memorial Hall was the venue for the Sportsman’s Dinner, one of the main off-field fund raising events of the year arranged by the Club, writes Alistair Clements.
Guest Speaker was Alan Kennedy, well known former Newcastle, Liverpool and England full back who made some 250 appearances for the scousers, a couple for England and almost 350 league and cup appearances in total ,mostly in what is now the Premiership.
All Premiership and local league clubs were circulated hoping for memorabilia to raffle and auction, Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers were able to oblige but most pleasingly the local clubs came up trumps with Plymouth Argyle and Yeovil Town providing complimentary tickets and Exeter City giving a signed team photograph. The Holsworthy club are grateful for this support. In fairness to the Premiership clubs most replied saying that they were deluged by such requests and simply could not satisfy the demand, nevertheless all credit to the local clubs who did us proud. All goodies were sold for impressive sums and a fine buffet was provided by The White Hart.
Kennedy, a member of the 1980's Liverpool side which won two European Cups and a hat-full of League Championship and Cup wins amused the audience with his tales about players he played alongside such as Bruce Grobellar, Alan Hanson and Tommy Smith and Managers Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley considered by many to be two of the best Managers ever.
Comedy was provided by Tommy Cooper tribute magician Stewart Masters.
A really entertaining evening providing both funds and goodwill for the Club.
